Urethral Stricture

Urethral Strictures develop as a result of an injury to the urethra by accident, surgical instruments or after a sexually transmitted diesase or infection. The common symptoms of urethral stricture are poor flow of urine, frequency of urine, burning in urination and post void dribbling of urine. The diagnosis can be made by history and investigations like retrograde urethrography (RGU) and culture of urine or urethral swab.

The treatment for urethral strictures are endoscopic (VIU) or open surgeries. About 30% patients fail endoscopic surgery and need open surgery to prevent recurrence. Invariably after more than two procedures done endoscopically the third is likely to fail. The urethro plasty or open surgery involves removing the strictures and joining the normal ends of urethra or putting in a flap after incising the stricture commonly the flap is taken from the mouth cavity. Some patients who are unfit for an open surgery can be treated by self or periodic dilation by the surgeon to relieve them of their problem.
